Maldivian citizens can obtain a new passport if the passport is lost or stolen from the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The following describes the procedure.

• Should have already obtained a passport from the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

1. Apply to Maldives Police Service for a police report or submit a letter to DIE stating that the Passport has been lost  if in Male’.
2. Call and check whether the DIE has received the Police report from the Maldives Police Service.
3. If DIE has received the police report, go to the service counter at the DIE and obtain a token from the token machine and once your token number is displayed, submit the filled application form (IM01) with the necessary documents (listed in “documents and Forms required”).
4. Make the payment and obtain the payment receipt (the date and time to collect the passport will be included).
5. Go to the service counter on the informed date, (after taking a token number) and provide your National Identity Card and the Passport payment receipt.
6. The Staff at the counter will request you to give your finger prints twice, once for capturing fingerprint data and secondly to verify the captured image for Electronic passport applications.
7. You will also be required to sign the application form for signature verification and as a record that passport has been issued to the rightful owner.

• Filled IM01 form (“Dhivehi Passport ah edhey form” (74KB, )
• 01 passport photo (taken not less than 1 month) photo must confirm passport photo standards issued by the DIE. (All registered photo studios are informed of these standards).
• Valid National Identity card (original) or a document issued by the DNR with a photo, and an identity card Number.
• Revenue stamp (worth Rf 10).
• Payment receipt (to collect the passport).
• Police report (original) obtained from Maldives Police Service.

• The amount to be paid for issuing passport is:
  • Rf 450 for Ordinary Passport (32 pages).
  • Rf 650 for Ordinary Passport (64 pages).
  • Rf 300 for Non-Electronic (Ordinary) passport.
  • Rf 250 for Temporary Travel Document
• To replace a lost or stolen passport a police report is necessary, and depending on the police report Controller of the DIE has the right to fine the individual with a fee Rf 2000 to Rf 20000 (if the Passport was lost from your negligence).

• As a general rule, passport applications received before 10:30 AM passport are issued on the same day.
• If you lost your Passport while abroad you have to inform to the nearest mission, further more you have to inform immigration department of that specific country in order to facilitate your return journey.
• If DIE finds information provided on passport forms are not authentic even after the issuance of passports, DIE has the right to stop the person from using the passport.
• Passports of citizens over 10 years will only be handed over to its bearer.
• As a rule all from 26th July 2007 Immigration department will issue Electronic passports for all citizens except children under 10 and those residing abroad.
• Passport is a valuable identity document and must safe guard it all times.
• Passport numbers does not remain the same, with every new passport being issued either after expiry or any other reason passport number will change.
