OBTAIN AN ORDINARY PASSPORT

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. Passports are issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The following describes the procedure

CRITERIA/PRE-REQUISITES
  • Electronic passport 
    • Entitled to all Maldivian nationals over 10 years of age and who are in a condition that they can visit Department of Immigration and Emigration for receiving the passport, as a rule.
  • Non- Electronic passport 
    • Citizens below 10 years, and those unable to attend Department of Immigration and Emigration to receive Passport for various reasons.

 

PROCEDURE

Form submission to Department of Immigration and Emigration:

  1. Take a token number from the token machine and when your number is displayed submit the filled IM01 form with the necessary documents (listed in “documents and Forms required”) to Department of Immigration and Emigration  service counter.
  2. Make the payment and obtain the payment receipt. (The date and time to collect the passport will be included in the payment receipt.)
  3. Go to Department of Immigration and Emigration on the date stated in the payment receipt (after taking a token number) and provide your National Identity Card and the payment receipt.
  4. The Staff at the counter will request you to give your finger prints twice, once for capturing fingerprint data and secondly to verify the captured image for Electronic passport applications.
  5. You will also be required to sign the application form for signature verification and as a record that passport has been issued to the rightful owner.

Form submission to FDI station or Reethi photo:

  1. Submit the filled IM01 form with the necessary documents (listed in “documents and Forms required”) to counter.The staff at the counter will help to fill the application form if you did not submit the filled application form
  2. The service staff will request you to sign the application form.
  3. Make the necessary payment and obtain the Service receipt and the payment receipt. (The date and time to collect the passport will be included in the payment receipt).
  4. Go to Department of Immigration and Emigration on the date stated in the payment receipt (after taking a token number) and provide your National Identity Card and the payment receipt.
  5. The Staff at the counter will request you to give your finger prints twice, once for capturing fingerprint data and secondly to verify the captured image for Electronic passport applications.
  6. You will also be required to sign the application form for signature verification and as a record that passport has been issued to the rightful owner.
DOCUMENTS AND FORMS REQUIRED
  • Filled IM01 form (“Dhivehi Passport ah edhey form(74KB, )
  • 01 passport photo (taken not less than 1 months) photo must confirm passport photo standards issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. (All registered photo studios are informed of these standards)
  • A valid National Identity card (original) made after 01 May 2003 or a document issued by the Department of National registration with a photo, and an identity card Number.
  • Revenue stamp (worth Rf 10/-).
  • Previously held valid passport. (The valid previous passport is needed in order to cancel it. If expired or previously made passport is not submitted, the new passport will be issued as a passport made due to lost of previous passport. The same policy will be used against this issue as the policy made for issuing a passport due to lost. Failing upon to produce previous passport if any will be considered lost or stolen. And you may be levied on a fine of Rf 2000 to Rf 20000 as per Immigration act.)
FEE
  • The amount to be paid for issuing passport is:
    • Rf 450 for Ordinary passport (32 pages).
    • Rf 650 for Ordinary passport (64 pages).  
    • Rf 300 for Non-Electronic (Ordinary) passport.
    • Rf 250 for Temporary Travel Document

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • As a general rule, passport applications received before 10:00 AM passport are issued on the same day.
  • If Immigration Department finds information provided on passport forms are not authentic even after the issuance of passports, Immigration department has the right to stop the person from using the passport.
    Passports of citizens over 10 years will only be handed over to its bearer.
  • As a rule all from 26th July 2007 Immigration department will issue Electronic passports for all citizens except children under 10 and those residing abroad.
  • Passport is a valuable identity document and must safe guard it all times.
  • Passport numbers does not remain the same, with every new passport being issued either after expiry or any other reason passport number will change.
  • Every Maldivian needs a separate passport, even for a new born. Department of Immigration and Emigration has a policy of one person one passport.
  • If all pages of a passport are utilized before the expiry of your passport you are advised to renew your passport before you travel to avoid being rejected from another country.
