Maldivians must renew Passport if damaged, if all pages of a passport are used before the expiration, or if the passport is expired. Passports are issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The following describes the procedure.

• Electronic passport
  • Entitled to all Maldivian nationals over 10 years of age and who are in a condition that they can visit Department of Immigration and Emigration for receiving the passport, as a rule.
  • The applicant should have a valid Passport issued by Department of Immigration and Emigration.
• Non- Electronic passport
  • Citizens below 10 years, and those unable to attend Department of Immigration and Emigration to receive Passport for various reasons.
  • Must have a valid Passport issued by Department of Immigration and Emigration.

1. Go to the service counter after taking a token number and submit the filled IM01 form with the necessary documents (listed in “documents and Forms required”).
2. Make the payment and obtain the payment receipt (Date and time to collect the passport will be included).
3. Go to service counter on the date stated in the payment receipt after taking a token number and provide your National Identity Card and the payment receipt.
4. When you are requested, give your finger prints twice and sign the application form and obtain the Passport.

• Filled IM01 form (“Dhivehi Passport ah edhey form” (74KB, )
• Revenue stamp (worth Rf 10).
• 01 passport photo (taken not less than 1 months) photo must confirm passport photo standards issued by the DIE. (All registered photo studios are informed of these standards).
• Valid National Identity card (original) or a document issued by the Department of National registration with a photo, and an identity card Number.
• If applying to renew after the expiry date: The Passport issued previously if any issued after 01 October 1995 (original)
• If applying before the expiry date: 
  • A written note stating the reasons for renewal if the bearer intends to issue new passport.
  • The Passport issued previously, if any issued after 01 October 1995 (original)

• The amount to be paid for passport is:
  • Rf 350 for Electronic passport (32 pages).
  • Rf 600 for Electronic passport (64 pages).
  • Rf 300 for Non-Electronic (normal) passport.
• If applying to renew before the expiry date: additional Rf 100 per year for the amount of years remaining before the expiry date, as a cancellation fee. (if the number of days before the expiry date is less than 8 months then the cancellation fee is not required)
• If applying to renew a damaged Passport: Controller of the Department of Immigration and Emigration has the right to fine the individual with a fee Rf 2000 to Rf 20000.

• The number of days remaining before the expiry date is counted starting from the date of application .Additional days recorded, after a complete year would be considered as a year, when calculating the cancellation fee for the remaining duration before expiry. For example, the number of days before the expiry date is two years and one day it will be considered as three years.
• Even though the passport is expired and not usable, the passport is needed in order to cancel it. If expired or previously made passport is not submitted, the new passport will be issued as a passport made due to lost of previous passport. The same policy will be used against this issue as the policy made for issuing a passport due to lost.
• You can also apply to FDI station and Reethi photo to renew the passports if all pages of a passport are utilized before the expiry or if the passport is expired.
• As a general rule, passport applications received before 10:00 AM passport are issued on the same day.
• If Immigration department finds information provided on passport forms are not authentic even after the issuance of passports, Immigration department has the right to stop the person from using the passport.
  Passports issued to children under 10 years that require changing the photo or passports issued before 25th July 2007 does not need pay a cancellation fee.
• Passports of citizens over 10 years will only be handed over to its bearer.
• As a rule all from 26th July 2007 Immigration department will issue Electronic passports for all citizens except children under 10 and those residing abroad.
• Passport is a valuable identity document and must safe guard it all times.
• Passport numbers does not remain the same, with every new passport being issued either after expiry or any other reason passport number will change.
• If all pages of a passport are utilized before the expiry of your passport you are advised to renew your passport before you travel to avoid being rejected from another country.
• Passports issued to children under 10 years that require changing the photo or passports issued before 25th July 2007 does not need pay a cancellation fee.
